History

Denton Cooley

GHA traces its roots to the vision of Denton A. Cooley, M.D., of the Texas Heart Institute. A pioneer of advanced heart surgery—including the first successful implantation of a total artificial heart in a patient—Dr. Cooley famously said that his “greatest innovation was not in the operating room; it was the concept of value-based, bundled pricing for cardiovascular care.”

Dr. Cooley’s physician organization, CardioVascular Care Providers, Inc. (CVCP) was one of the nation’s first value-based bundled care delivery organizations. Their innovation began in the commercial space; was validated through a pilot project with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); and has proven itself through more than 30 years of successfully enabling high-quality care under economically sustainable value-based bundled payments.

GHA was founded to commercialize this approach—applying the experience of Dr. Cooley and his colleagues to the challenges of healthcare providers, payers, and employers.
